This article elaborates on ASHRAE GreenGuide, BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), Green Building Challenge, and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It explains the structure of the rating systems and explains how and where certain credits or points can be attained such as: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design Process. Although green building rating systems are voluntary, "(G)reen building rating systems are transforming the construction industry by focusing on high-performance, energy-efficient, economical and environment-friendly buildings.
